A single bathroom in a Bondi Beach walk-up, rebuilt from the frame out in walnut-look veneer, marble and dark gloss tile. The frosted window stayed. The timber battens, the spa bath and the brown floor tiles did not. In their place is a doorless walk-in shower behind a curved tiled wall, a floating vanity with a Calacatta Viola-style marble top, and bronze tapware throughout.

A kitchen, two bathrooms and a laundry rebuilt in a harbourside Woolloomooloo apartment, high enough to look across the bay on one side and the city on the other. The palette runs walnut-look joinery, cream stone-look benchtops and brushed brass, in place of the white-on-white finish the rooms had before. Colour comes from a glazed ochre splashback in the kitchen and a patterned tile wall in each bathroom.

A full renovation of an apartment in a 1995 full-brick North Sydney block, covering the kitchen, the living and dining areas and both bathrooms. The original fit-out was still in place after thirty years: a white laminate kitchen with dark green granite benchtops over a parquet floor, and bathrooms in white square wall tiles with matching green granite vanity tops. The finished apartment runs on one warm palette of pale chevron oak, marble-look stone and brushed brass.

A whole-apartment renovation in a 1960s harbour-front block in Point Piper. The kitchen was a closed galley with cream doors, a black benchtop and one small window, and grey carpet ran through the living areas. The rebuild opened the kitchen to the living room behind a long stone island, laid wide-board timber through the main rooms, and redid the bathroom, powder room and bedroom joinery in the same palette.

A kitchen and a bathroom rebuilt in a Drummoyne apartment, both in the same olive green, with white stone-look benchtops and brass hardware in the kitchen and marble-look porcelain in the bathroom. The kitchen keeps its U-shaped plan and its servery opening to the living room, now squared off with the benchtop running through as a ledge. Timber-look boards run from the kitchen across the living room and down the hall.

The original fit-out was still in place: beige gloss laminate doors over dark granite with a mirror splashback in the kitchen, and white square wall tiles over a cream laminate vanity in the bathrooms. The finished apartment runs on one palette of white shaker joinery, marble-look stone and brushed brass.

Two bathrooms and the kitchen of an apartment in a 2000s tower on Pyrmont's harbour edge, rebuilt in a dark palette. The original fit-out was the cream tile and cream gloss cabinetry the building was finished with in the mid-2000s. The replacement runs the other way: dark green and bronze glazed tile, brass tapware and black timber-look joinery, with mirror and concealed lighting doing the work pale surfaces used to do.

A kitchen rebuild in a Surry Hills apartment, high in an architect-designed 2000s tower. The old kitchen was a white laminate island and a run of overhead cupboards sitting on beige floor tiles, with carpet starting where the living room began. The new one is white gloss handleless joinery carried to the ceiling, a white stone-look island with waterfall ends, a black composite sink and black tapware, and oak-look plank flooring running the whole way through.

A kitchen, a bathroom and a laundry rebuilt in a late-1970s Ryde walk-up, all three in the same white shaker joinery on speckled stone-look benchtops. The kitchen holds its U-shaped plan and puts the sink under the existing window, with a peninsula running out toward the living area. The bathroom is tiled floor to ceiling in large-format porcelain, with a rain shower over the bath behind a frameless screen and a round vessel basin on a shaker vanity.

A two-bedroom unit in a 1960s Randwick walk-up, renovated to let. The kitchen and bathroom were both taken back to bare walls and rebuilt, while the parquet floors and textured ceilings in the rest of the unit stayed exactly as they were. The unit went on the rental market straight after handover and was leased in twelve days.

The kitchen wraps three walls and ends in a peninsula facing the living area, so whoever is cooking is still in the room. A kitchen rebuild in a family home in Vaucluse, built around one long curved stone island with seating down its outer edge. The same stone runs up the wall as a full-height splashback, wraps the rangehood and returns to the floor beside the cooktop, so the room reads as one material instead of a benchtop with tiling above it. Joinery is pale woodgrain in flat panels with knurled brass handles, and it all sits under the house's existing ornate cornices.

A compact apartment kitchen in Campsie, rebuilt as one long run with an island facing the living area. The joinery is two-tone: white base cabinets under a stone-look benchtop, timber-look overheads carried up to the bulkhead. A warm LED strip runs the full length of the bench and does most of the lighting work.

The finish stays quiet throughout, with soft grey-white joinery, a white stone-look benchtop, gloss subway tiles and warm light under every cupboard.
